Oral
History Project
The
National Park Service at Sandy Hook worked with Monmouth University
students to interview and tape personal experiences of veterans and
civilian personnel who were stationed at or worked at Fort Hancock.

Students reached out to these people through telephone calls,
internet research and mailings and, in addition to the interviews, have
compiled a database to keep track of all found veterans which will be
useful to genealogists and researchers.
The Sandy Hook Foundation has provided funding to convert the
audio tapes of the interviews to compact discs.
An ongoing project, funding is needed to continue the process of
converting the audio transcripts to produce written transcripts.
The completed transcripts can be viewed on-line at www.nps.gov/gate/historyculture/sandyhookpeople.htm.
If you are a Fort Hancock veteran, or would like to learn more
about the NPS oral history efforts, contact Sandy Hook Museum Curator
Mary Rasa at 732-872-5953.
